Family Fissurellidae: Keyhole limpets

Keyhole limpets (Fissurellidae) have a hole at the top of their cap-like shell. Their name comes from the shape of this hole.


Fossil specimen of the keyhole limpet Diodora carolinensis from the Pleistocene Caloosahatchee Formation of Hendry County, Florida (PRI 76780). Specimen is from the collections of the Paleontological Research Institution, Ithaca, New York. Length of specimen approximately 4.5 cm.

Modern specimen of the gastropod “slit shell” Bayerotrochus teramachii from Taiwan (PRI 70103). Specimen is from the collections of the Paleontological Research Institution, Ithaca, New York. Maximum diameter of specimen is approximately 10.5 cm.
